When checking the 2015’s cycle, I noticed that “activity streams” disappeared from the cycle which would mean they already hit the productivity cycle. Gartner recently released their 2014 Hype Cycle for emerging technologies. From the hype cycle, we can also infer that prior to the acquisition, Twitch was likely to be in the “Peak of Inflated Expectations” cycle which would further confirm how it caught both Google’s and Amazon’s interest. It definitely makes sense as it was acquired a year earlier by Amazon and we can expect Amazon to use its incredible team to support and scale up Twitch’s operations. The graph dates from 2014 and we can see that activity streams fell into the “Slope of Enlightenment” cycle.

Live streaming became such a thing that it got picked up by Gartner’s Hype Cycle under the tag “Activity Streams”.
